Discrete Movements

For the longest time I have felt that my artworks are about deconstruction. The quest to visually deconstruct things is a way of learning for me and a way to find a kind of equilibrium. Both in music and the visual arts I find it useful to break things down to their basic elements or as the Jasper Johns calls them "discreet movements." Today I find myself listening to a deconstruction of The Beatles-While My Guitar Gently Weeps, a song that Frank Sinatra called the greatest song ever recorded. And I find it absolutely spellbinding listening to Paul McCartney's baseline in isolation and then realizing how vital it is to the whole. I will today be thinking about discrete movements as I create my latest work in the studio.

Afternoon light & the new Tillicum Bridge

Looking out my window at around 1:30 every day is a visual delight as the sun rakes across my off-white brick wall and shadows from the trees on my patio cast dancing diagonals. This is certainly inspiration for me and very well could show up in one of my next artworks. That said, yesterday I and tens of thousands of other people walked across the new 'Tilikum Crossing' Bridge Of the People spanning the Willamette River yesterday on just about the most perfect afternoon imaginable! The passing clouds cast subtle silvery shadows over the white cables and towers in an absolutely stunning and mesmerizing way. This span is a true winner in my book of things to do around town.

Just beginning my crossing from the west side on over to the east! The towers can be seen in the distance with their silvery cables in the afternoon sunlight. Stunning!
